Lecture Overview:

In this lecture, I will discuss ways to make theoretical contributions in management research based on my own academic journey. Specifically, I will introduce five paths:

  1. Path 1 (interdisciplinary research), based on my studies on human resource systems and firm performance.

  2. Path 2 (testing competing theories, theory integration, and extension), based on my research on creativity and innovation.

  3. Path 3 (exploring new phenomena to generate insights), based on my completed and ongoing studies of artificial intelligence in human resource management and business processes.

  4. Path 4 (multilevel research, theory revision), based on my research on creativity and proactive personality.

  5. Path 5 (dynamic perspectives for new insights), based on my research on creativity and innovation.

Speaker Bio:

Professor Gong Yaping is currently a Chair Professor in the Department of Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His research interests include goal orientation theory, creativity and innovation, strategic human resource management, and team management. His papers have received numerous awards, including the “Responsible Research in Business and Management Award” Finalist (2018), Journal of Management “Scholarly Impact Award” Finalist (2017), Emerald “Citation of Excellence Award” (2013, 2016), “All-academy Carolyn Dexter Award” Finalist (2013), and the Academy of Management Meeting “Best Papers Award” (2006, 2008, 2022, 2023). According to research by John P.A. Ioannidis at Stanford University (2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023), his career-long citation score (excluding self-citations) ranks among the top 2% in the business and management field. Professor Gong serves on the editorial boards of the Academy of Management Journal and Journal of Management and has twice received the Academy of Management Journal “Best Reviewers Award” (2016, 2023). He was previously Associate Editor of Academy of Management Perspectives, Management and Organization Review, and Asia Pacific Journal of Management, and served on the editorial boards of international academic journals including Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Organizational Behavior, and Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology.
