讲座题目：Robots and Migrants: Evidence from China’s Robot Replacement Policy

摘要：This study investigates the impact of Robot Replacement (RR) policies implemented by Chinese local governments on immigrant labor across different job tasks. We collected official RR policy documents from various cities, with 234 out of 335 selected cities implementing the policy from 2010 to 2017. Utilizing data from the China Migrants Dynamic Survey and employing a staggered difference-in-difference strategy, we estimate the effect of RR policy on immigrant labor in various job tasks. Our findings suggest that the implementation of RR policy attracts more laborers skilled in non-routine cognitive and operational work tasks into the city, with no displacement effect for those engaged in routine work tasks. Furthermore, our analysis indicates that young and middle-aged laborers (aged 16-45) and both lower- and higher-educated laborers who specialize in non-routine work tasks, are more likely to relocate to the city under this policy. Additionally, the RR policy is more likely to attract male laborers, which may exacerbate gender inequality in the labor market. The mechanism analysis find that industrial structural changes play a substantial role in driving shifts in labor demand in the context of technological change.

熊艳艳，浙江大学百人计划研究员，香港中文大学经济学博士，香港中文大学刘佐德全球经济及金融研究所名誉研究员。主要从事人力资本配置、教育公平、创新等劳动经济学和发展经济学领域的实证研究。主持国家自然科学基金和国家社会科学基金等多项研究课题，研究成果发表于Journal of Economic Perspectives、Social Science & Medicine、《金融研究》等期刊上。
