讲座题目：Annexation and household well-being: Evidence from China

内容简介：This study examines the effect of city annexation on household well-being in China, which has experienced rapid urban expansion in the past decades. Using a nationally representative household survey with detailed household financial information and administrative division adjustments in the 2010s, we show that annexing surrounding counties into central cities enhances the overall annual consumption of households in annexed counties by about 9 percent. Annexation only improves consumption that satisfies basic needs, such as food, residential consumption, travel and telecoms consumption, but has little effect on developmental consumption that improves the quality of life. Additionally, annexation does not affect subjective well-being. Finally, the consumption-enhancing effect stems from improvements in local labor markets after annexation, such as increases in job opportunities, wages, and entrepreneurial income, rather than increases in housing wealth or public transfer following annexation.

肖伟，西南财经大学经济与管理研究院经济学教授，博士生导师，应用经济学系主任。本科及硕士阶段就读于南开大学，在瑞典斯德哥尔摩大学获得经济学博士学位。研究领域为区域与城市经济学，研究方向包括城乡治理、土地与住房市场、城乡劳动力市场、区域经济政策评估等。研究成果发表在《金融研究》和Journal of Economic Geography, Journal of Regional Science, Regional Science and Urban Economics, Journal of Comparative Economics等中英文期刊。获得国家自然科学基金青年项目和面上项目资助。
