Zheng Gongcheng is the Vice-Chairman of the Academic Committee at Renmin University of China, a Professor and Ph.D. supervisor at the School of Labor and Human Resources, a member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress from the 10th to the 14th sessions, a member of the National People's Congress Committee on Social Construction, the Vice-Chairman of the 12th and 13th Central Committees of the China Democratic League, the founding and current President of the China Social Security Society, and the Vice-President of the China Charity Federation. He is also the founding and current Editor-in-Chief of the Social Security Review.

Professor Zheng serves as a member of the Advisory Committee of the State Council's Health Reform Leading Group, a member of the Expert Committee of the National "14th Five-Year Plan," the Vice-Director of the National Disaster Reduction Committee's Expert Committee, and a member of advisory committees for multiple departments including the Supreme People's Procuratorate, the Ministry of Civil Affairs, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, and the National Working Committee on Aging.

Professor Zheng has long been engaged in research in the fields of social security and social construction. He is the chief expert of major projects under the Central Marxism Theory Research and Construction Project and the chief expert of more than 10 national key projects. He has published over 40 books, approximately 500 theoretical academic articles, and his more than 40 significant research findings have received important directives from central leadership. He is a national candidate of the "Millions of Talents Project," a selected cultural figure in the "Four Batches" talent project, a leading talent in philosophy and social sciences under the "National Ten Thousand Talents Plan," and an expert who enjoys a special government allowance from the State Council.
